The New Norm Mask

If the site shows in stock the masks are ready to ship. I’ll be making a small batch daily.

What a crazy time! Now that the CDC has recommended that everyone should wear a mask in public I am now making something I never even thought about. So, I spent some time making my own design and researching the little data that is available for common materials and styles.

The main purpose for wearing these masks is to cover your own face and protect others from your respiratory droplets in case you are asymptomatic . According to data I’ve seen, the most effective available material is a poly/cotton blend. So, I sourced a 4.6oz tightly woven poly/cotton blend and am using two layers. It’s important that the mask fits when looking straight but, also while moving your face up and down, side to side, and while talking. The bottom strap ties around your neck, while the top is elastic cord which keeps tension across the top of your face while moving. I’ve also integrated a steel nose wire to keep all the air passing through the fabric and to reduce fogging of glasses. The mask design allows it to be worn over an n95 mask to prolong the life of the n95.

I can’t claim the level of filtration and these are sold as Fashion masks. There are material tests that say a tight woven cotton/poly blend to be 70% effective with the proper fit. For an additional layer there are more tests showing that blue shop rags are very effective and you can use half a sheet folded in half as an additional filter. Just fold it and stuff it inside the fabric mask. Each mask will be shipped with 5 sheets of Scott Blue shop towels(enough for 10 filters) that can be used and washed several times each.

Care: I recommend hand washing with soap and hot water. Air drying is the best and the UV rays will kill any bacteria on the fabric. Please wash the mask before it’s first use. Boiling, drying in high heat, or bleach can damage the elastic cord. I designed the mask so the elastic can be replaced easily.
